While there are a million things I love about Walt Disney World, one of the things I love most is the fact that there are attractions for every type of person: people who don't like rides much at all, people who like to take it easy, and, of course, those who are thrill seekers.
Since I am a huge fan of thrill rides myself, today I am going to discuss my top 5 favorite Disney World thrill rides.
When this attraction opened in April of 1998, it was known as Countdown to Extinction, but the ride’s name was later changed to promote the Disney film Dinosaur. It is an EMV dark ride attraction that takes riders on a journey through the Cretaceous period to capture an Iguanodon to save it from extinction. Riders encounter several different dinosaurs before returning back to present day (hopefully with the Iguanodon in tow). Don’t miss your shot at saving the Iguanodon the next time you're in Animal Kingdom, but watch out for the Carnotaurus!
4. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
In 1999, Hollywood Studios welcomed the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith. Riders are launched at 57 miles per hour into a whirlwind of neon road signs as they speed their way to Aerosmith’s show. Roller coaster lovers will love this ride full of twists and turns and even an Aerosmith tune accompanying every ride, so makes sure to stop for a ride if you find yourself on Sunset Boulevard.
3. Space Mountain
Space Mountain is an all-time favorite of Disney goers everywhere, so of course it was going to make the list of my top favorite thrill rides. Riders zoom through this space-themed coaster at nearly 30 miles per hour, and the drops and turns of Space Mountain are intensified by the fact that riders are in the dark and cannot see them coming! In 2010 the ride received what they call “Starry-O-Phonic Sound” effects to add even more to your experience as you zip through space.
2. Expedition Everest
This is one of Disney World’s newest thrill rides, having only opened in April of 2006. This is one of my favorite rides in all of Walt Disney World, both for the experience of the queue and the ride itself. The coaster takes guests on a journey up the famous Mount Everest, but the trek is cut short when the track you’ve been traveling on is ripped apart. The ride takes you forwards and backwards through the mountain as you try to escape the beast that lives there...and there’s a close call towards the end so keep your eyes peeled for the Yeti of Mt. Everest!
1. Tower of Terror
Tower of Terror is not only my favorite thrill ride in the parks, it is also in my top favorites of any Disney ride. You are wrapped up in the creepy aura the ride gives off from the second you spot it at the end of Sunset Boulevard until you have boarded your elevator to the Twilight Zone. One of the best parts about this ride is the randomized drops, something that was added in a few years after the ride first opened, so now riders will never know the sequence or number of drops they will experience. So the next time you’re in Hollywood Studios make sure to check in to the Hollywood Tower Hotel and enjoy your stay!
